The Fitzgeralds of southwestern Ireland, like the O'Neills and the O'Donnells et al. of Ulster, were subjected to large confiscations of lands — over half a million acres in the Fitzgeralds' case — for leading rebellions, albeit reluctantly, against the crown of England, and for preserving the Catholic faith in Ireland.
